  9. For the United States, as for Mr. Slahi, the legacy of the torture remains complex and multifaceted two decades
after the attacks on Sept. Today, Mr. Slahi, 50, is a free man in Mauritania, his homeland in West Africa, after nearly 15 years
as a detainee, an early portion of that time with the threat of a death-penalty trial hanging over him.
The filmmaker provided a platform for the so-called
‘Tipton Three’ to recount the events that led to their 2001 capture in Afghanistan, and subsequent incarceration for two years at the
base, while employing actors, including Riz Ahmed
in his first film role, to dramatise their ordeal.
He was never charged with a crime but was locked away for a further
six years before his 2016 release, and neither Foster
nor Cumberbatch wanted to steal focus from his ordeal.
